Chain snatching gangs from TN loot pilgrims
Rajahmundry: Gangs which are allegedly experienced in chain snatching and other belongings from people have entered in both East and West Godavari districts. The tension in the police force is palpable.
According to police sources, the gangs spread out in both districts where the pushkaralu going on. They mingled with the pilgrims and taking advantage of the rush snatched the belongings. The police caught a seven member wo-men gang on Thursday at Kotilingalapet.
However, they did not agree as they were thieves. “We took seven women into custody. We are interrogating them for their identification,” said Rajahmundry Crime DSP A.Trinadh.
Despite the loud proclamation of the police officials regarding the installation of CC cameras in entire Rajahmundry they woefully failed to curb the menace. The gang operates in crowded places like railway station, bus stands, RTC complex and other crowded areas.
Their modus operandi is to mingle with the bathing pilgrims and snatch away gold ornaments from them. Bags, purses and luggage kept on the river bank are also a target. Ayinapudi Venkata Lakshmi of Nedunuru village was taking a dip in the river, when the thieves snatched 9.5 sovereigns of gold ornaments that were on her person.
N. Lakshmamma lost her 3.5 sovereigns of gold ornaments which were kept in her bag on the bank of the river, before she went to take ay dip. Another four cases have been reported to the police of theft of mobile phones, bags, and gold ornaments.
Many of the pilgrims who lost their belongings have not complained to the police as they feel that they take little or no action.
“I lost Rs.10, 000 cash which was kept in my purse. Somebody snatched it. But I did not lodge any complaint as I didn’t think they would do anything. “said A.Kamalakara Rao of Ongole. However, the Rajahmundry Crime DSP A.Trinadh said that all steps have been taken for nabbing the thieves and robbers. They have kept strict vigil on 25 thieves operating in the area.
