Kochi: The CPM on Thursday apologized for carrying out a moral police attack on a journalist and her husband by two party activists in Thiruvanthapuram on July 12.
Party district secretary Kadakambilly Surendran, in a Facebook post, tendered an unconditional apology to the journo and criticised the two CPM men involved in the attack.
Jisha Elizabeth of vernacular daily Madhyamam and her husband John Aloor were harassed by the locals led by the CPM men when they were sitting at John’s office at Jawahar Nagar on July 12. Jisha, who was suffering from fever, was waiting to visit a doctor.
Rajendran, 48, and Vinod Kumar, 34, were arrested on Tuesday. Vinod Kumar is the Jawahar Nagar branch secretary of the CPM. According to the police, George Varghese, a resident of the same colony, and others had harassed the couple, accusing them of immoral activities.
“A neighbour’s foolishness led to the incident and it is disheartening to know that two CPM activists were unnecessarily involved in it,” Mr Kadakambilly posted. He termed the act of the two as immature and added that they defied their own logic.
“I share the couples’ grief and mental agony. The party will not close its eyes towards moral policing and such incidents. The party will censure them and try to correct the two,” he said.
The apology was well- accepted on social media with thousands giving feedback to the leader.
