CBI seeks Maran Bail cancellation

Petition has been filed by CBI in Madras High Court seeking for custodial interrogation of Maran

Chennai: A petition filed by CBI in the Madras High court seeks cancellation of anticipatory bail granted by the court to former Union telecom minister Dayanidhi Maran, who has been accused in a multi crore telephone exchange scam while he was holding office.

The CBI, in the petition, has also sought for custodial interrogation of Maran. The prosecution avers that, abusing his official status, Maran was using the illegal BSNL telephone exchange set up at his residence in Chennai for the benefit of Kalanidhi Maran’s, Sun TV. He took connections of 323 telephone connections, four leased circuit and 19 post paid connections installed in his Boat Club road residence.

As a result, BSNL incurred a loss of Rs 1.20 crore.Dayanidhi Maran and five others were facing charges under sections 120 B (Criminal conspiracy) read with 409 (Criminal breach of trust by public servant), 420 (Cheating) of IPC and sections 13(2) (Criminal misconduct by public servant), 13(1) (c) and 13(1) (d) of Prevention of Corruption Act.

Apprehending his arrest, Maran sought anticipatory bail from Madras High court which Justice R Subbiah granted on June 30. On Thursday, the CBI filed the petition before the court praying the bail granted to him be squashed and sought permission of the court for custodial interrogation. The petition is likely to be taken up for hearing on Tuesday.
