Boy drowns during study trip near Kodenchery, school attacked
KOZHIKODE: A student was drowned in the river Iruthulli at Koodathayi near Kodenchery here during a field visit from St Mary’s Higher Secondary School Koodathayi as part of study.
The deceased has been identified as Albin John (16), a Plus-One student. Sources said the students were taken to river as a part of the curriculum and two students attempted to cross the river by swimming.
Albin drowned while swimming back from the other side. The mishap occurred at 3.30 pm and the body was fished out after an hour.
Following the incident, an angry mob attacked the school alleging laxity on the part of teachers. The principal and staff were under siege and slogans were shouted.
Window panes and furniture were damaged in the melee. Police had to used tear gas to clear the mob.
A few teachers suffered minor injuries. Later, the police arrested four of them, adding fuel to the fire and crowd thronged Kodenchery police station demanding their release.
The atmosphere returned to normalcy after the intervention of Thamarasserry DYSP who asked to free the detainees. The station house officer (SHO) at Kodenchery station said Albin John slipped into the river and drowned. A case of unnatural death was registered.
