Worms wriggling in drinking water in Kovai suburb

Around 12, 000 families are living in Kuniamuthur which comes under ward 88
Coimbatore: Worms were found wriggling in the drinking water supplied by Coimbatore corporation to residents of Raj Nayakkar Thottam in Kuniamuthur in suburban Coimbatore.
Residents of Raj Nayakkar Thottam get drinking water only once in eight days, even that has been found infested with worms, complain residents. The overhead water storage tank from which water is supplied to residents has not been cleaned for several years now, they claim.
According to 76-year-old V. Palanisamy, the overhead tank was cleaned 20 years ago and thereafter no cleaning has been done. The 40-year-old overhead tank which has the capacity to hold 2 lakh litres of water is in a dilapidated condition with its walls and staircase damaged.
“The drinking water pipeline which is used by 2, 000 families. In the months of June and July we receive the drinking water once in eight days but for rest of the months it becomes really unpredictable, sometimes it takes 15 days also,” added Palanisamy.
“It’s been five years now since we have had access to clean drinking water. We have to filter and boil the drinking water because it is worm-infested. Children get fever and cold frequently here But the ward councillor is asking us to adjust and bear with the problem,” fumes resident Babu.
But ward councilor R. Amutha Arulmozhi denies that the drinking water is infested with worms. Nonetheless, she said that the drinking water will be cleaned with medicined. “We cleaned the tank last year. Within the next 15 days, we are going to clean the tank again.”
Around 12, 000 families are living in Kuniamuthur which comes under ward 88. “Since it is a very old tank, we have no plans to renovate it. But we plan to build a new water tank in the ward with 20 lakh litre capacity. The fund is coming from MP and MLA constituency development fund. The project will start in another two months,” said the ward councilor.
This is not just one problem which the residents complain. The open, clogged drains do not have any slabs to cover it and are not being cleaned regularly.
