Nilgiris Mountain Railway heritage day commemorated
Natrajan also spoke about why the NMR was conferred with world heritage site
Coonoor: July 15 is always a day to remember and cherish for the aficionados of the Nilgiris Mountain Railway (NMR) as on this day in 2005, this famed mountain railway was conferred the world heritage site tag by the Unesco.
To commemorate the NMR-heritage day, the Heritage Steam Chariot Trust (HSCT), an organization of NMR lovers, joined hands with the railways and organized an event at the railway station at Coonoor on Wednesday to create awareness on conservation of NMR and the genesis of mountain railway in the Nilgiris, to the studdents and the public.
Speaking on the occasion, K. Natarajan, president of the HSCT, elaborated on how the NMR came into being against the odds and challenges in the late 1800s that earned it the name engineering marvel.
He explained on its unique racked track that runs between the Mettupalayam and Coonoor and the significance of the steam locomotives in hauling the NMR train in the racked track.On the occasion a demo was conducted on how coal-fired steam locomotives function on the racked NMR track.
Natrajan also spoke about why the NMR was conferred with world heritage site and the need for the current generation to join hands for conserving NMR in its old glory as it is a heritage treasure.
