Diabetes is more of a disorder than of a disease

CHENNAI: Indicating that diabetes is more of a disorder than of a disease, the Madras High Court came to the rescue of a woman who was denied employment on the ground that she was a diabetic, and directed the railway administration to give appointment order to her within eight weeks.
A division bench comprising Justices V. Ramasubramanian and T. Mathivanan gave the directive while dismissing a petition filed by the chief personnel officer, Southern Railway, which challenged an order of the Central Administrative Tribunal, directing the railway administration to appoint one P. Pushpam to a suitable Group ‘D’ post.
The Bench said, “In the absence of any scientific evidence to show that a diabetic will not be able to discharge the duties of his office, it is not possible to accept the stand taken by the petitioner. This is especially in view of the fact that today India has become the diabetic capital of the world. According to a global report, submitted by the Indian Diabetes Research Foundation, 40.9 million Indians are diabetic. Therefore, it is not possible to accept that they are unemployable or that if employed, they would become a liability on the employer”.
