KOCHI: It was a hard-earned homecoming for Gopi, 55, a native of Avanoor in Thrissur, after living a fugitive’s life for 26 years in Muscat. His fault: he lost his passport.
Gopi, who was welcomed by his family at Nedumbassery airport, said he was fortunate that did not land in jail. “Life was particularly hard after the company in which I was working closed down,” he said. Later, it became tough for him even to communicate with his relatives back home, forcing them to believe that Gopi must have settled in Muscat and was no longer interested in the family back home.
A struggling Gopi finally decided to take advantage of the general amnesty declared in Oman, but still did not have the means to take the flight ticket. He, however, managed it with the help of the Malayalee Association in Muscat. The family was there to receive him at the airport after being informed by Blood Donors Kerala co-ordinator Jishnu Raj.
