17,000 GHMC workers resume duty
The GHMC claimed that more than 95 per cent workers had rejoined work
Hyderabad: Around 17,000 GHMC personnel, including temporary workers, resumed duty on Wednesday. The corporation said that over 10,000 tons of garbage had been removed so far and the rest would be cleared by Thursday evening.

Meanwhile, the strike seems to be losing steam as employees are re-joining work for fearing of losing their jobs. Among those who attended work on Wednesday, 933 were from SHGs, 17,058 were outsourced employees, 2,409 regular employee, 954 drivers and 1,355 transport workers. The GHMC claimed that more than 95 per cent workers had rejoined work. The corporation also hired an additional 183 workers to the existing 397 and deployed 86 vehicles for monsoon emergency works. On Monday, temporary workers cleared 2,745 MT of garbage, 3,642 MT on Tuesday and 3,214 MT on Wednesday.
GHMC commissioner and special officer Somesh Kumar said, “The garbage accumulated for the past nine days will be cleared by Thursday evening. About 17,000 workers out of 24,000 have joined duty and 933 sanitary field assistants out of 942 have also rejoined. Stringent action has been initiated against those who have been obstructing the work. From Wednesday onwards, a special officer has been deputed in each circle to look after the sanitation works apart from taking attendance of workers.”
“The main focus will now be on clearing of garbage. After that, all efforts will be made to solve the problems,” he said. “Also, insurance for drivers has been raised to Rs 10 lakh from Rs 2 lakh and for sanitation workers to Rs 5 lakh from Rs 1 lakh; other demands and grievances will be taken into consideration once all the workers call off strike,” he said.
