Students protest privatisation of Avinashilingam University
Coimbatore: Around 500 students from the Student Federation of India studying in Avinashilingam Deemed University staged a protest against the university management. “Avinashilingam Deemed University is running as government aided university. This university runs under ministry of human resource development (MHRD) receiving Rs 54 crore per year. The primary goal to start this university under government aid was to educate women and raise the standard of women.
Now, the greatest danger is the university’s plans to fully privatise the institution and turn it into a money plundering estate through the trust, where the management is scheming to mint money,” said one of the students.
The students claim that they have been threatened by the university management saying that they will give the students transfer certificate if they do not stop protesting. The students were also prevented from to entering the college campus. “We haven’t planned out the duration of this protest . The management is not giving us any proper reasons for their actions; they are just fooling around with all of us. Only after half-a-day of protest, were we allowed to enter the college,” said one of the members from the Student Federation of India.
If the university is going to be changed into a self-financing university the education of the women who comes from poor and needy families will be dully affected. The fees structure will increase from Rs 4,000 to Rs 4,00,000. The funds will be stopped. In the name of donation, lakhs and crores of money will be swindled, said one of the students.
“We want the government to take over the university and appoint a new chancellor immediately. We don't want the departments to be changed into self-financing. Students should be provided with scholarships. All the staff vacancies should be filled and university buildings have to be improvised,” said the students.
