Ruckus over bus bay at Kozhikode Corporation council meet
KOZHIKODE: The corporation council meeting here on Tuesday witnessed noisy scenes with the UDF councillors protesting against the mayor denying permission for a calling-attention motion on the medical college bus terminal work.
The councillors barged onto the dais of mayor A.K. Premajam shouting slogans forcing her to end the meeting after passing the agenda items.
The chaos started when Pottammal councillor P. Kishan Chand sought permission for the calling-attention motion.
Ms Premajam said the issue was sub- judice and hence could not be discussed. The meeting also witnessed verbal clashes between the UDF and LDF councillors over the model anganwadi inauguration recently.
Welfare standing committee chairman M. Radhakrishnan Master protested against ignoring the corporation and the mayor in the programme despite the fact that the corporation had given land for the anganwadi.
The mayor said that the corporation would seek an explanation from the district social welfare officer.
Parayancheri councillor K. Raveendran asked the corporation to declare Sarovaram biopark as a plastic-free zone.
The mayor said this would be brought to the notice of the district collector, who is the chairman of the DTPC.
The council unanimously passed C.P. Saleem’s resolution urging the state government to dismiss the 10th Pay Commission’s recommendation to raise the pension age from 56 to 58.
It also expressed concerns over the increasing number of mobile towers coming up in the city. The councillors complained that the Reliance group was trapping the protesters with fake cases. The meeting also discussed the increasing of stray dog menace in the city.
Corporation secretary B.K. Balraj said that there was a Supreme Court stay on killing stray dogs and that mad dogs can be killed only with the permission of a medical panel report.
