Posts to revive Godjal

India Post to continue service due to public demand
Nellore: Postal department has been planning to revive the Godjal (Godavari Jalam) scheme in view of demand from the public. The scheme is meant to provide Godavari water in 500 ml bottles during Pushkarams between July 14 and July 25 to those who cannot make it to the Pushkara towns for a dip due to ill-health, old age, poverty or simply a busy schedule.
India Post has entered into a pact with an ISI-certified company to supply Godjal in 500 ml bottles between July 14 and July 25. The AP government gave its nod to draw water from Godavari at Rajahmundry for supply to the devotees.
As many as 7.35 lakh people across AP and Telangana and other parts of the country and even foreign countries booked the Godjal online at www.appost.in/eshop till July 13.
There are scores of enquiries for the water from the public to various post offices after the stampede at Rajahmundry on Tuesday.
“The death of devotees at Pushkara Ghat seems to be discouraging people from going to Pushkarams. There was a sudden spurt in enquiries for water bottles from Tuesday morning. In fact, we have closed the booking on Monday itself,” said Mr B.V.N. Suresh, sub-postmaster of Dargamitta Post Office in Nellore.
However, the demand from public led the department to consider revival of the scheme. Sources in the department said that the revival proposal almost got green signal from higher authorities and devotees can book the water online at www.appost.in/eshop between July 15 and July 25.
Bottles will be delivered at their doorsteps as far as possible before July 30. An official of the department said that they will bottle the water during Pushkaram phase to suit the sentiments of the devotees.
