Nitish Kumar meets Arvind Kejriwal, backs statehood for Delhi
He met Kejriwal in an apparent bid to seek a common platform against the BJP
New Delhi: With the Bihar Assembly elections around the corner, state chief minister Nitish Kumar met his Delhi counterpart Arvind Kejriwal in an apparent bid to seek a common platform against the BJP.
While Mr Kumar, who had come to the national capital to attend iftar party hosted by Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, extended his support to Mr Kejriwal for his demand for full statehood for Delhi, sources said they discussed the upcoming Bihar elections also.
“Mr Kumar is keen to see Mr Kejriwal campaign in Bihar for the Janata outfits. Since the AAP leader was successful in humbling the BJP in the Assembly polls, Mr Kejriwal could make an impact in the Bihar elections as well,” sources in the JD(U) said, adding that Mr Kumar had thrown his weight behind Mr Kejriwal during his Lok Sabha campaign against Mr Modi in Varanasi.
The JD(U) leader had also lent his party’s support to the AAP in the Delhi Assembly elections. However, sources said, Mr Kejriwal may find it tough to campaign in Bihar in favour of the Janata outfits as he is wary of being seen in the company of RJD chief Lalu Prasad, who has been convicted in a corruption case. “Mr Kejriwal may choose not to campaign for the RJD nominees, but can opt to campaign for Mr Kumar,” sources said.
The Bihar elections are due in October and the alliance of the JD(U)-RJD-Congress would be taking on the NDA. The AAP has not yet stated whether the party will contest the Bihar elections or not.
