Rajahmundry: Hundreds of family members of the victims of stampede at Pushkar ghat in Rajahmundry ended up in the mortuary of the government hospital on Tuesday only to collect the bodies of the deceased and return to their native places, shattered.
Eyewitnesses and the injured recall a situation they never came across in their lifetime. “Following the stampede people fell down and those at the bottom, particularly women were crushed to death and suffocation. Confused devotees rushed towards the ghat when doors opened at once. It was terrible even to recall,” said P. Badram, who witnessed the stampede.
All police officials faced the blame for the mishap. However,they helped many victims from dying at the spot. The bodies of the dead are being sent to their respective villages through special service ambulances. District joint Collector Markendyulu had arranged the facility and was monitoring activities.
