Chennai: Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa has filed a defamation case in the principal sessions court here against the CEO and journalists of Rediff.com for publishing a malicious news item against her.
On behalf of the Chief Minister, city public prosecutor M.L. Jegan on Tuesday filed the 110th defamation petition since the AIADMK returned to power in May 2011.
Jegan filed the petition against chief executive officer cum chairman Ajith Balakrishnan, editor-in-chief Nikil Kakshman, senior associate editor Abhishek Mande and reporter R. Ramasubramanian. In the complaint, the Chief Minister said that rediff.com, on July 10 had published malicious contents in a news item under the caption “Chennai media knew Jaya’s health was not fine but kept mum”.
The complainant contended that the online portal published defamatory contents with an intention to harm the reputation of the Chief Minister. Ramasubramanian, in the report, made allegations about CM’s health condition, which were false.
Ajith Balakrishnan, Nikil Kakshman, Editor Abhishek Mande and Ramasubramanian had committed an offence punishable under section 500 (punishment for defamation) IPC. Soon after the defamation petition was filed, rediff.com removed the news item from its portal.
