Visakhapatnam: GVMC is looking at alternative measures to clear the garbage piled up at various parts of the city due to the strike by sanitary staff. The civic body has decided to hire around 400 daily wage workers, including employees from various organisations and companies, in the city.
GVMC commissioner Pravin Kumar, on Tuesday, had also met committees of various residential areas and urged them to conduct Swachh Bharat campaigns in the city to clear the garbage to avoid stench.
“We will come up with an action plan to clear the garbage as per zones. Around 400 daily wage labourers, six tractors, 36 dump bin drivers, 52 tippers, 25 JCBs have been readied.
All the vehicles and other gear will be given to the workers. We have also sought help from the police department, Credai, Hoteliers Association, Bulk Water Supply Association, VPT, Gangavaram port, NTPC and other companies,” Mr Kumar told reporters. GVMC will have to bear an additional burden of '321 crore per annum towards outsourcing wages, labour payment and pensions, if the demand for hike of wages by Rs 2,000 is agreed upon.
At present the civic body spends around Rs.650 to Rs.700 crore on sanitary staff. He also held a meeting with residential welfare associations and communities from various parts of the city and appealed them to take up swach bharat campaigns in their respective areas from Wednesday morning.
