Familes tensed over stampede in Godavari
They are worried about their safety and are anxiously waiting for news
Vijayawada: Family members of pilgrims, including those of state government employees in Rajahmundry now, are worried about their safety and are anxiously waiting for news.
People from various areas of Krishna district reached Rajahmu-ndry on Tuesday morning for participating in Godavari Pushkaralu. Some of them believed that the first day of Pushkaralu is very auspicious and other felt lesser number of devotees on the very first day would make it easier for them.
However, with news of the deadly stampede, family members back home were panic stricken. With calls not connecting in the morning for sometime, the family members’ anxiety increased manifold.
Majority of the people have watched the Godavari Pushkaralu inauguration on television channels right in the morning. But on hearing about the stampede, they immediately tried contacting their kith and kin in Rajahmundry to ensure they were safe. But phone network didn’t work for quite sometime. Others didn’t receive calls as they were in a rush.
M. Venkaiah, who visited Rajahmundry from Nandiwada of Krishna district with his family members said that he luckily escaped the mishap. He added that he was very near the place where the stampede took place but returned on seeing the shoving and jostling.
The district administration also introduced special buses and shifted some employees a day before the inauguration. According to AP NGO leader B. V. Rao, all the employees are safe. He said that several NGO leaders were also present in the same VIP ghat.
