Demolition begins at South railway station for Kochi Metro

A total of 3.14 acre land near the station is being acquired for the metro construction works

Kochi: The demolition of buildings has begun at the South Railway station premises to facilitate construction of the Kochi metro.

A total of 3.14 acre land near the station is being acquired for the metro construction works.

“The demolition of the Corporation building, shopping complex near it and the railway quarters building have started. All the necessary land has been handed over to the Kochi Metro Rail Ltd,” said a railway official.

The metro station is being set up at the South railway station premises so as to provide an inter-transport connectivity facility for the commuters.

The ticket counters for the Kochi Metro and the railways would be set up on the first floor of the upcoming metro station.

A walkway would be constructed from the proposed metro station to Platform No one Foot Over bridge which has an escalator facility already.

The whole purpose is to facilitate commuters to interchange transportation modes with ease. “All issues including shadow charges were settled with the KMRL and the railways will extend technical aid too for the construction works,” the official said. However, metro sources said the priority now was to complete the line from Aluva to Maharajas College.

The metro station construction would take almost a year, they said.
