Chennai: A 45-year-old computer teacher in a private school was arrested for alleged sexual assault of a class 3 girl inside the school campus. The eight-year-old victim was taken to a classroom on the third floor of the school and assaulted sexually, police said.
The accused, M.James Maria Gnanaraj, computer instructor, was arrested on Monday night from his residence in Kodambakkam after investigations. The action of the cops was based on intimation from doctors at the Government Institute of Child health (ICH), Egmore who confirmed that the girl was sexually assaulted.
“The girl had complained of pain in her private parts to her parents after which they approached a private hospital initially. The girl was referred to the children’s hospital in Egmore after which we were alerted,” Assistant Commissioner, K. Chandrasekaran said.
Personnel from the Anna Nagar All Women’s Police Station (AWPS) conducted enquiries with the child and parents. “The instructor lured the girl into an unoccupied classroom on the third floor where he sexually assaulted her. He had threatened her to not reveal anything to her parents or other teachers,” according to an investigating official.
The child too had opened up only after the doctors asked her as to what had happened, a police officer said. A case under section 9 (F) (staff of educational or religious institution committing sexual assault on a child in the institution) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POSCO) Act, 2012 was booked against the accused.
A native of Tirunelveli, the accused is a divorcee and was working in the school for the past five years, police said adding that he teaches students of classes 8-12. He was produced before a magistrate in Egmore and remanded in judicial custody.
The parents of the child had taken her for further medical examination at the Government children's hospital on Tuesday. "The child is fine now. We have recommended for further tests with a child gynecologist," said Assistant Resident Medical Officer, Dr Raghunathan.
