VS Achuthanandan demands action in gold smuggling via Kochi

A detailed probe is required regarding his appointment

Thiruvananthapuram: Opposition leader V. S. Achuthanandan has demanded action against those behind gold smuggling through the Nedumbassery airport and a CBI inquiry to unearth the nexus among police and customs officials and jewellery owners.

In a statement here, Mr Achuthanandan said there was an attempt from certain quarters to put the entire blame on an individual police officer in order to save bigwigs involved in the racket.

The policeman was posted at the Emigration wing of the airport soon after completion of his training period following a Congress MLA’s recommendation. A detailed probe is required regarding his appointment.

He said there were reports that the smuggled gold had been purchased by prominent jewellers in the state. The gold had been bought using black money but, as of now, the customs department had issued a notice to only one jeweller.

He said considering the involvement of big sharks in the police and customs, the government should order a CBI probe.
