Temperatures to be high for 5 more days in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana

In spite of it being almost mid-July, the two states haven't received substantial rains till now

Hyderabad: With the Southwest Monsoon avoiding Andhra Pradesh and Telangana since the start of July, the soaring temperatures are making one feel as if the summer has been extended in the two states.

The IMD has stated that the days will be hot in parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh for the next 48 hours. “Heat wave conditions would prevail over some parts in the districts of East Godavari, West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur and Prakasam of coastal Andhra Pradesh,” stated the IMD.

“Due to a weak Southwest Monsoon, there are no rains and hardly any cloud cover over the two states, which is causing a rise in day temperatures. The conditions will remain the same for the next five days and temperatures will remain high,” said Mr N. Narasimha Rao, assistant meteorologist at IMD, Hyderabad.

On Monday, Ongole in coastal Andhra Pradesh recorded the maximum temperature of 41.2ºC followed by Machilipatnam at 40.8ºC, Kavali 40.7ºC and Jangamaheswarapuram 40.2ºC.

Temperatures in Rayalaseema too were inching closer to 40ºC on Monday. Tirupati recorded 39.8ºC and Nandyal 39ºC.

Temperatures in Telangana too have been on the rise and the humidity has been adding to the discomfort.

In Telangana, Nalgonda recorded the maximum temperature at 38.4ºC followed by Hanmakonda at 37.5ºC. Except Hakimpet, all the district headquarters crossed the 35ºC mark on Monday.

In spite of it being almost mid-July, the two states haven't received substantial rains till now.

The low pressure area that had formed in the northern Bay of Bengal didn't result in much rain in the two states.

Only isolated light rains were recorded in the last 24 hours. Visakhapatnam recorded a maximum rainfall of 5 cm followed by Merakamudidam and Tirupati aero stations, which recorded 3 cm each.

In the first week of July, rainfall was below normal by 51 per cent over the country and 81 per cent in the Southern peninsula.

As per the weekly rainfall statistics, Telangana had either scant or deficient rains.

“Right now there is a trough of low pressure which runs from Odisha to south Tamil Nadu across off coastal Andhra Pradesh, but this will not result in heavy rains. For the next five days, it will be either isolated rainfall in coastal Andhra Pradesh or dry, i.e. no rainfall days, in Telangana and Rayalaseema,” Mr Narasimha Rao added.
