Telangana Agriculture university develops low GI rice variety

GI is a number used to represent how a food type affects a person’s sugar level

Hyderabad: The Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University has developed a new variety of low Glycemic Index rice known presently as the RNR 15048.

It GI of 51 and falls in the category of low GI food and is one of the few rice varieties falling in this category in the country. RNR 15048 was in testing mode since a few years and this year, it will be officially released by the TS government.

GI is a number used to represent how a particular food type affects a person’s blood sugar level. The number ranges between 50 to 100. Most rice varieties sold in India have GI ranging 55 or above in a scale of 100. The rice variety, which has been developed for TS farmers where monsoon is poor, has got cultivators interested from other states because of its low flowering period.
