Vedharanyam: Four Tamil Nadu fishermen were injured as Sri Lankan navy personnel attacked them in mid-sea off the Vedharanyam coast in Nagapattinam district on Monday. Official sources said that the fishermen, Panneerselvam (38), Anand (30) Rajendran (50) and Ramasamy of Pushpavanam hamlet ventured into the sea on Saturday by a fiberglass boat.
When they were fishing some ten nautical miles away from the coast on Sunday night, a nine-member Sri Lankan naval force surrounded them and attacked the fisher-folks, sources said.
The island naval personnel snatched away their catches, icebox and other personal belongings, before letting them off with a warning. With the help of local fishermen, all the four injured fishermen reached Vedharanyam on Monday night and got admitted to the government hospital there, the sources added.
On information, Local MLA Kamaraj called on the injured fishermen at the hospital and enquired about the incident and their health condition. Vedharanyam marine police investigating.
