Cops’ efforts bring down cases under Section 498A in Vijayawada
There were 377 missing cases registered last year, 447 cases have been registered in the first half of 2015
Vijayawada: The number of dowry harassment and other cases coming under section 498A has come down by a whopping 90 per cent in Vijayawada police commissionerate limits in the first half of 2015.
City cops, inspired by Supreme Court ruling which suggested no immediate action against married men upon receiving complaints from their spouses regarding dowry harassment and domestic violence, have been instrumental in the recent development.
In context of Section 498A being misused largely by women, police preferred not to book cases immediately after receiving complaint but counsel the couple. This reportedly helped many families from falling prey to fake allegations leveled by women who intentionally lodge complaints expecting compensation.
The move by the cops has brought down the number of 498A cases from 442 between January and June 2014 to 42 during the same period in 2015. Meanwhile, a deeper look into the crime statistics of first half of the year in comparison to corresponding period of last year reveals an increase in the number of missing cases in city even as a special wing has been formed to trace missing persons.
While there were 377 missing cases registered last year, 447 cases have been registered in the first half of 2015. Also, house day robberies also registered an increase with as many as 44 daylight robberies committed in the first half of 2015 as against the 22 cases in 2014.
