Coimbatore: Police take custody of ‘DIG’ conman for inquiry
Posing as a police officer, the fake DIG had been on an extortion spree
Coimbatore: The conman who paraded around as a deputy inspector general of police (DIG) was taken into police custody on Monday for two days for interrogation. Although the city police moved a petition seeking custody for five days, the judicial magistrate court II granted two days of custody to interrogate G. Shanmugham Durai, 49, a native of Madurai.
Shanmugham told in court that his life would be under threat in the custody of police. His opinion was registered and he was sent with the police. The judicial magistrate C. Vijay Karthik, ordered police to produce Shanmugham in court on July 15. Posing as a police officer, the fake DIG had been on an extortion spree.
On July 5, Shanmugham sought police personnel to escort him for a raid on a commercial establishment. He was accompanied by a divorcee Meena Kumari, 50, who he claimed was his wife. With police escort, the fake DIG had tried to extort money from commercial establishments. The cops, who accompanied him, had arrested him on suspicion. Investigations revealed that the accused had extorted money in a similar fashion across the state.
