Bengaluru: Serial accident kills woman, injures 9 others

A 28-year-old woman was killed on the spot, while nine others were injured

Bengaluru: A 28-year-old woman was killed on the spot, while nine others were injured in a serial accident involving a fertiliser laden truck, two autorickshaws, one car and two two-wheelers at Kottigepalaya bus stand near Sumanahalli Junction under Kamakshipalya police limits on Monday.

The deceased, Lakshamamma (28), was in the auto that was hit by the lorry first, the police said. Of the nine injured, Bheemanna is said to be in a critical condition, while others are out of danger, including a five-year-old boy, the police said.

The accident occurred around 8.15 pm when the driver of the 10-wheel truck lost control, jumped over the median and ploughed through vehicles coming from the opposite directions. The truck was heading from Magadi towards Summanahalli Junction when the accident occurred, the police said.

Lakshmamma, a resident of Laggere and a garment factory worker, died on the spot. Her body was shifted to Victoria Hospital. The nine injured, including the 5-year-old boy, were treated at Lakshmi Specialty Hospital.

“The driver might have lost control as the truck is heavy and the road is steep,” said S. Girish, DCP, West Division (Traffic). “We will also examine whether the accident was due to a brake failure or due to speeding. A crane was used to tow the truck,” he said.

Traffic was thrown out of gear for over an hour on the roads leading to Nagarbhavi, Magadi Road and Summanahalli Ring Road. The Kamakshipalya traffic police seized the truck and arrested the truck driver, Mallikarjun. “We have taken up a case under Sec 304 of IPC which is culpable homicide not amounting to murder,” said M.A. Saleem, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic).
