The victim, Mangalam used to chide the girl for constantly talking over phone
Chennai: Police on Monday arrested a 21-year-old engineering student for murdering her grandmother after quarrel over the girl’s relationship at their residence in Shakti nagar, Porur three days ago. Initially, cops detained two persons including paramour of the victim’s son-in-law, buying the accused Kanimozhi’s masked robber theory. However, during the course of investigations, the girl confessed to her role in the murder after which the SRMC Police arrested the girl.
The victim, Mangalam used to chide the girl for constantly talking over phone with her boyfriend. “She was planning to marry the girl off to someone from the extended family. But, when she learnt of Kanimozhi’s relationship, she got upset and picked up fights regularly with her,” an investigating officer said.
On Thursday night after a similar argument, Mangalam had assaulted Kanimozhi on her head for which the accused reacted, police said. Kanimozhi’s father R. Subbiah who works as a nursing assistant in Employees state insurance corporation (ESIC) hospital in the city came back home around 3 am on Friday when he was told that a masked robber intruded into the house.
The cops too initially believed the girl’s version and detained two persons after Subbiah confessed to the cops that he was in an extra marital affair with a woman and suspected her role in the murder.
However, police investigations further revealed that her family had forcibly shifted Kanimozhi to Chennai from her native Tiruvarur, after they learnt of her relationship from her college days.
The accused was a student of Government engineering college, Kumbakonam, and graduated in electronics and communication (ECE).
“It disturbed me that my grandmother kept on chiding me and assaulted me. I couldn’t sleep that night. So, I woke up and stabbed her several times using a kitchen knife when she was sleeping and left her to die,” police quoted the girl as saying. A magistrate court remanded Kanimozhi to judicial custody for 15 days, and the police have booked her on charges of murder.
