Move over julep, the daisy’s here

Whisky daisy is already being called a “zesty sipper” by those who’ve sampled its delights

If the mint julep has long been the official — and celebrated — drink of the Kentucky derby, then there’s another drink that is trying hard to displace the julep’s status as the most famous of the derby tipples. The “whisky daisy” is the drink that’s attempting that monumental task — in its position as the official drink of the 21st Indiana Derby, which will take place in the US next weekend.

The whisky daisy is already being called a “zesty sipper” by those who’ve sampled its delights. While we won’t be sipping on a cup of this by the race course, here’s a primer breaking it down for you, to be enjoyed in the comforts of your home. Squeeze the juice of a lemon, then combine with 120 ml simple syrup, 45 ml whisky and a small amount of grenadine in a cocktail shaker. Shake, shake, shake — then strain into a glass filled with ice and garnish with a lemon. And then, sip away!
