Bad influence: TV soaps making viewers negative
Visakhapatnam: A study conducted by an Andhra University researcher has raised concerns about those addicted television soaps. Interviews and a survey with a set of 20 questions, posed to Vizag women who watch daily serials has revealed that the noise, crass language and ‘villain-like women’ shown in the serials make viewers feel miserable creating a sense of negativism.
Furthermore, the same negativity is reflected in the way housewives actually behave with people at home. The negative characters portrayed in the serials are attracting many towards TV serials as they convey plotless negativism. “Due to the variety, fiction and the dramatic element shown in serials, women of all age groups are fascinated watching television serials.
In a way, serials are imbibing wrong family values in the social system as most serials promote extramarital affairs, live for the day concepts and many other western values which may destroy the cultural fabric of society,” researcher, Padma Meenakshi, told this correspondent. The study revealed that due to the mushrooming of cable channels in vernacular languages, most women resort to watching TV serials in their own languages, while educated and people from other states watch Hindi serials.
Ms Meenakshi observed that Indian serials are some of the most engaging slots on television. The serials are telecast after a thorough survey of its targeted audiences and their preferences. “For instance, family dramas are usually aired during the afternoons and in the evenings, while comedy shows are telecast at teatime.
