Two debt-ridden farmers commit suicide in Karnataka
Chitradurga/Hubballi: Unable to repay loan and dejected over crop loss, a 55-year-old farmer hanged himself at his field in Kaaluvehalli village in Challakere taluk of Chitradurga district on Sunday. The deceased has been identified as Mallayya. He had grown groundnut in his field and was dejected over successive crop loss due to lack of rainfall. He had borrowed loans from his friends and relatives, and also from a cooperative society. Parashurampura police registered a case.
Another debt-ridden farmer committed suicide in Arikatti village of Hirekerur taluk in Haveri district on Sunday. The deceased farmer has been identified as Ravi Jambur (31). He had taken Rs 2 lakh loan in the name of his father from Canara Bank. He had also borrowed Rs 1.25 lakh from private finance institutions and money lenders. He had grown maize in two acres of his farm. He was depressed as he had suffered crop loss. A case has been registered at the Hamsabavi police station.
