P Chidambaram’s escort vehicle hit at signal by hatchback

Chennai: Four persons were injured in an accident involving the convoy of former Union Minister P. Chidambaram’s on Sunday morning after a hatchback rammed into the escort vehicle near Raj Bhavan. The escort vehicle had halted at the signal when the speeding car rammed into it. In the impact, the escort vehicle moved forward and hit Mr Chidambaram’s luxury car. The former Union minister escaped unhurt, police said. He was on his way to the airport when the incident happened around 5 am.

According to police, the hatchback with five people on board was on its way towards Saidapet when the driver, Balaji lost control of his car and rammed into the police escort vehicle. The group was returning to the city after a weekend in Puducherry when they met with the accident. Police suspect the driver to have dozed off behind the wheels leading to the mishap.

Apart from severe damage to the hatchback, two of the occupants, Jaison (22) and Pooja (18) suffered minor injuries and were treated at a private hospital in Guindy while two others, Vijayakumar and Balaji were treated at the chromepet government hospital, police sources said.

“The security personnel in the escort vehicle too didn’t suffer any injuries,” a police officer said. The Guindy traffic investigation police have registered cases under sections 337 (Causing hurt) and 279 (Rash driving) against the driver Balaji.
