Latin Catholics not averse to voting for LDF
KOCHI: The Latin Catholic community, which has more than 20 lakh members in the state, will not be averse to supporting the Left Democratic Front in elections, Archbishop Soosapakyam said here on Sunday.
Addressing a press conference after the conclusion of the 26th general assembly of Kerala Region Latin Catholic Council (KRLCC) Bishop Soosapakyam said that a large majority felt that the UDF had not given its due to the community and that might reflect in the coming elections.
The Latin Catholic community, traditionally supporters of UDF, is not averse to LDF. “The Left has changed their attitude on matters connected with religion and beliefs and we are not averse to the Left,” he said. The bishop, however, said the Church would not intervene or issue any guidelines to the community on how to vote in elections.
The KRLCC had submitted a 25-point representation to the government, but the latter had not paid any attention to it so far, he added.
Shaji George, political affairs committee convener of KLRCC, said the discontent of the community would be expressed in the upcoming elections.
The government had not shown justice to Latin Catholics. “We will adopt a political position taking into account the local situation,” he said.
