As civic poll nears, UDF revs up protests
Thiruvananthapuram: With local body elections approaching, the political rift between the ruling and opposition councilors has taken a new turn with the district congress committee stepping in to intensify protests against the ongoing corruption allegations against various schemes and projects taken up by the civic body.
KPCC president V M Sudheeran will inaugurate the mass dharna being planned at the Corporation main office on Monday. Congress workers will take out a protest march to the corporation office from Ashan Square.
UDF councillor R Harikumar said that the protest was against nepotism, red tapism and widespread corruption that was going on in the Corporation.
“We have been raising this for long but the authorities are not responding. We have decided to file a complaint at the Vigilance and Anti-corruption Bureau demanding a probe into every allegation,” said Mr Harikumar.
The protest march which would start from various points in the district will reach the Corporation office at 11 am.
UDF has raised a series of allegations including corruption in building permit allocation, LED streetlight project and undertaking of road works without council approval.
However, the LDF led ruling front has refuted the charges and has stated that they were baseless allegations.
