Childless couples demand vegetarian attributes in egg donors
Couples who often cannot conceive due to problems with their sperm or eggs have had to resort to assistance from donors. In India, it's well known that couples shopping for donors demand both looks and brains. What isn't so well known, despite being fairly commonplace, is a more outrageous request — a vegetarian egg donor.
According to a report, gynaecologists who run in vitro fertilization (IVF) centres in Bangalore are increasingly seeing couples asking for eggs of vegetarian donors, specially requesting Brahmins or Jain women.
Is this the byproduct of a typical Indian mindset? Educational and professional backgrounds, extra-curricular preferences, linguistic skills, religion all form part of the catalogue while choosing a donor. While donors in India remain anonymous, the trend has shifted from religion and complexion to lifestyle habits.
Despite all the medical and technological advancements, couples are known to be choosy about religion. Several doctors went on record to say despite such demands, they advise the couples to ensure the egg is healthy and fertile, and not bother about such details.
Does the increasing wishlist highlights discriminated against even before conception?
