No takers among girls for mining engineering

Preference for aeronautical, marine engineering drop this year
Chennai: Despite Anna University opening its doors to female students to join the mining engineering program at the College of Engineering, Guindy, no female student has opted for this stream this year. An analysis done at the end of 11 days of government quota single window counselling for engineering colleges by academician and career counsellor Jayaprakash A. Gandhi revealed that boys have filled up all the seats in mining program.
“Not many girl students in the top cut-off score list prefer streams like mining. Also, the level of awareness among girls about job prospects for mining is less. This is why no girl joined mining despite the relaxation this year,” Gandhi said. This year’s government quota counselling has another interesting trend compared with last year. The cumulative percentage of absentees is less this year. It has come down to 22 per cent from 24 per cent last year.
Many female students have also opted for electrical and electronics engineering (EEE) this year whereas electronics & communication engineering (ECE) and computer science were the most sought after last year. However, 95 per cent of boys chose mechanical engineering this year. “In the past when a girl student graduated in EEE, she had to work only in the electrical industry, which they were not ready to do because of the risk factor involved in it. Today, with the advancement in electronics sector, several get recruited in this advanced blue-collar industry and so it is no wonder the number has gone up,” K.Shanthi, a student who joined EEE said. Preference for aeronautical and marine engineering has come down this year, because of lack of job opportunities in the sector, analysis revealed.
