Tamil Nadu, Kerala achieves the lowest Total fertility rate

Chennai: Tamil Nadu and Kerala are the states that achieved the lowest Total Fertility Rate (TFR) in the country first, said health secretary Dr J. Radhakrishnan, after flagging off an awareness rally that was held from the Lighthouse to the University of Madras, on Saturday.
The state showed 1.7 per cent, as against the country's figure of 2.4 per cent in 2012. More than 1,000 people, including the members of the government doctors association, doctors association, students of the Presidency college, Queen Mary's college, Government Arts college in Nandanam, Quaide Millath College, Meenakshi college, SIET college, officials of the public welfare department in the Corporation, health workers and NSS students, participated in the rally that began from the Lighthouse and reached the University of Madras via Kannagi statue.
Placards highlighting the importance of family planning were held by the students during the rally to mark World Population Day. Earlier, Director of Medical Services Dr A Chandranathan, Director of Public Health Dr K. Kolandaisamy and other officials were also present on the occasion.
