Strict waste disposal system in Kozhikode to curb disease outbreaks
Kozhikode: To cover up the negligence of panchayat authorities not conducting the pre-monsoon drive in spite of sanctioning the required funds, the district health department has decided to launch an effective waste management system.
It has been identified that lack of proper waste management during the monsoon season and the dumping of waste at various parts of the district is the main reason for the increasing cases of communicable diseases.
According to the information collected from the department, on Friday alone 26 cases of confirmed dengue, 48 suspects and nine cases of H1N1 were reported.
Hence, the department in collaboration with the district administration and the city corporation has decided to sort out issues regarding waste management through various agencies.
“Volunteers have been appointed at various parts of the district in order to report the issues of waste dumping which later results in spreading diseases,” district health officer Dr Narayan Nayak said explaining the initiatives.
“We have instructed school authorities, government and private institutions and organisations and also to the general public to observe a day in every week as dry day, when the process of cleaning and dumping waste at the appropriate place takes place”.
Every Thursday, school and college students batch-wise will take the initiative of cleaning school and college premises and surroundings and on Fridays employees at various government and private organisations will spend two hours of the working time or during intervals cleaning their offices and surroundings.
In order to get an explanation from various panchayat offices that have failed to conduct the pre-monsoon drive, social welfares and panchayat minister Dr M. K. Muneer has called a meeting with their representatives on Saturday at collectorate.
