KPCL bags Golden Peacock award

Environment protection is at the heart of Port's philosophy

Nellore: Krishnapatnam Port has won the Golden Peacock Environment Management Award. Mr C. Sasidhar, managing director, Krishnapa-tnam Port, received the prestigious award, in recognition of Krishna-patnam Port's initiatives and achievements in the field of environment, from the Union minister of state for environment Prakash Javadekar. The 17th World Congress on Environment Manage-ment and Presentation of Golden Peacock Awards function was held in New Delhi on Saturday.

The Golden Peacock Awards, instituted by the Institute of Directors, are presented annually under various categories. The winners of the Golden Peacock Awards for 2015 were finalised by a grand jury headed by Justice P.N. Bhagawati, former chief justice of India and the chairman emeritus of Golden Peacock Awards, Justice (Dr.) Arijit Pasayat, former judge of Supreme Court of India and former chairman of competition appellate tribunal & authority for advance ruling (Custo-ms, Central Excise & Service Tax) and the chairman of the Golden Peacock Awards.

Golden Peacock Envir-onment Management Award is a coveted and prestigious recognition given to the organisatio-ns which have attained significant achievements in the field of environment management.

Giving away the details of the award to media persons on Saturday, chief operational officer of the port Subba Rao and public relations officer G. Venugopal said that environment protection is at the heart of Krishnapatnam Port's corporate governance and philosophy.

Some of the green initiatives taken by the port include plantation of over 20 lakh trees within the port and more than 50,000 trees in the surrounding villages, installation of solar lights in the port and solar water heaters in the employees' colony.

This is in addition to establishing gas connections for villagers so as to discourage them from cutting mangroves and adoption of Nellore town traffic islands and public buildings for maintaining greenery around the areas, they added.

According to Mr Venugopal, the port also bagged Seventh East Cargo Logistics Award and it was received by their CEO Anil Yendluri during a programme held at Chennai on Friday.
