Kochi's water woes remain unresloved
Every time a problem arises, the KWA comes up with some excuse

KOCHI: The water supply disruption in Kochi following power outage and technical problems caused by slush accumulation in the main pumping station of the Kerala Water Authority is yet to be resolved fully with many areas facing acute scarcity.
The areas badly hit are Perumanur, Thammanam. Thevara, Konthuruthy, Thrikkakkara, Eloor, Kalamassery, Aluva, Edathala, Churnikkara, Mulavukad, Fort Kochi, Cheranellur and Kadamakkudi.
Mr Antony Kureethara, councillor of Fort Kochi, said, “it is the responsibility of the KWA to rectify the problem or to make alternative arrangements.”
The supply was disrupted few days ago due to a rupture in the main cable of the KSEB connecting to the KWA pump station.
“We have reinstated the cable and started pumping from Friday,” said a KWA official. “Frequent disruption in power supply leads to a delay of 2-3 hours in pumping. In such a situation, it takes time for the water to reach the tail ends,” said the official.
The explanations offered by the KWA have failed to convince the suffering people, said Mr Manoj Kumar councillor of Aluva.
Every time a problem arises, the KWA comes up with some excuse. But the people wanted to know why the KWA is unable to make a standby system so that supply disruptions could be avoided, he said.
According to Mr P.M. Feroze, president of the Aluva unit of the All-India Youth Federation, the frequent damage to pipes and cables is the main reason for the present situation.
The KWA has to take some proactive steps to replace old and worn out pipes, he added.
