Karnataka border woes: CM to meet Kannada leaders

Kannadigas living in border areas of Maharashtra particularly in Jatt taluk are on an agitation

BELAGAVI: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will chair a meeting of leaders of pro-Kannada organisations in this border city in the first week of August as part of efforts to resolve problems faced by Kannadigas living along the state’s borders with Maharashtra and Goa.

In recent days, Kannadigas living in border areas of Maharashtra particularly in Jatt taluk are on an agitation against the failure of Maharashtra government to provide basic infrastructure. Social activist Anna Hazare also extended his support to these protesters, assuring them total support till they get sufficient amount of water.

Several leaders of pro-Kannada organisations who met the Chief Minister here on Friday brought to his notice problems faced by Kannadigas in Goa and Maharashtra. Thousands of Kannadigas were evicted during a demolition drive in Byena region of Goa during the last one year and more are expected to be affected by during ongoing demolition of illegal buildings in Goa.

Mr Siddaramaiah assured them that he would find a lasting solution to problems faced by Kannadigas while chairing a meeting here early next month.

Chairman of Action Committee of Kannada organisations, Ashok Chandargi, blamed the Border Advisory Committee and Kannada Development Authority for worsening situation and alleged that problems would not have worsened had both these organisations worked effectively.
