Drive without borders: Owners of non-karnataka vehicles protest
Bengaluru: Advocates and supporters of “Drive without borders” campaign organised a silent cycle rally to protest against the recent RTO drives and the motor vehicle taxation (known as Karnataka Motor Vehicles Taxation (Amendment) Act 2014.
Over 200 people participated in the rally which began at 8 am from Esteem Mall in Hebbal and ended at Shantinagar Bus Depot.
Waseem Memom, the lead campaigner of “Drive without borders”, said, “On February 28, 2014, the Karnataka government amended the Motor vehicle taxation (known as Karnataka Motor Vehicles Taxation (Amendment) Act 2014. This Act states that ‘Any vehicle plying continuously in Karnataka for more than 30 days has to pay the hefty lifetime tax levied by the government’.
The CMV Act 1988 states that any motor vehicle plying continuously in other state has to be registered in 12 months. The amendments are against the freedom of movement which our Constitution guarantees and are also against the spirit of the Constitution’s provisions and federal principles. The rally was to protest against this amendment.”
