Dinner at Tiffany’s throws light on how the blind live
Thiruvananthapuram: For the 30-odd people who gathered at Tiffany Brar's ‘Dine in the Dark’ it was a pleasant surprise.
They partook in the dinner comprising chicken soup, jeera rice, rumali roti, muttar – paneer, chicken, auber-gine, rajma, kadi and soufflé at her apartment on Friday.
For first time, they had a glimpse of the blind’s world. When the power supply goes off at home, the normal thing anyone would do is to light a candle or switch on the emergency lamp.
But the guests invited for the 25-year-old Tiffany’s SFS Palace Court apartment at Kowdiar had to remain in the dark for almost close to two hours.
At the entrance to the first floor hall, the guests were welcomed by Tiffany and Sam, one of the German volunteers.
After being led to one of the chairs in the dark, Tiffany, the brain behind the blind school on the wheels Jyothirgamaya, welcomed the gathering consisting of Brigadier Samir Salunke, station commander at Pangode Military Station, and his wife, Swapna Salunke.
“Except for some people switching on their mobile phones, the feedback I received from majority of the guests has been that it was a unique experience for them. This is just a new beginning and in future,” she said.
She had 12 volunteers, five of them blind, to help her. Jaya, one of the guests who works in the insurance sector, said she had taken her power of vision for granted until she took part in ‘Dine in the Dark’.
“People like Tiffany have always been living in the dark. But in complete darkness, I am trying to figure out where the volunteers have kept my four bowls of curries. This has been a shocking experience to feel how they live,” Jaya told DC.
