Chennai to put lit-up heritage buildings

The arrangements been done ahead of the Global Investors Meet (GIM) scheduled to be held in September
Chennai: As a part of elaborate arrangements ahead of the Global Investors Meet (GIM) scheduled to be held in September, 36 heritage buildings in Chennai will be decked up with lights. As home to colonial and Indo-Saracenic architectural buildings, the city should wear a most colourful look. Work will commence in the coming days though minor renovation work and painting has already begun in some of the buildings.
“The lighting of heritage buildings will not only give a fresh look to the city when foreigners arrive in Chennai but also show the richness of the buildings,” said an official. The condition of these old buildings will also portray how well heritage is looked in the city,” an official said. The 36 buildings that have been chosen for this venture include educational institutions, court, museum, places of worship and government offices.
The buildings that will be decked up with lights are the Kings Institute, Raj Bhavan, Madras Club, Anna University, Theosophical Society in Adyar, while other buildings that have been identified are Vasantha Vihaar, Chettinad Palace and Church of Holy Rosary.Most of the good-old buildings lie on the Kamarajar Salai along the coast. The DGP office, Victoria Student’s Hostel, Presidency College, PWD Office, Chepauk Palace, Senate House and the University of Madras will also be lit up. So too buildings on Mount Road - Higginbothams, LIC, PRR and Sons building.
Other buildings in the list include Ice House, Bharathiyar Illam, Hindu Higher Secondary School, Museum Theatre, Connemara Public Library, National Art Gallery, Eye Hospital, Ripon Building, Victoria Public Hall, Madras High Court, Head Post Office, Rooftop garden and Secretariat.
While many departments of the state government are planning ahead for the big meet, Chennai Corporation has already begun relaying old roads that are more than 30 years.
As many as 194 bus route roads across the city have been marked for relaying of the road, which includes roads that connect to the Chennai Trade Centre in Nandambakkam like Dr Muthulakshmi Road, Sardar Patel Road and Durgabai Deshmukh Road, where the meet will be held.
The civic body has allocated a fund of Rs 3.45 crore for road works, creation of additional parking lots, public health activities and other cleaning activities in and around the program area.
