Only 1 GHMC union ends stir in Hyderabad

GHMC deployed over 3,000 students and members of a self help group to clear the garbage
Hyderabad: The indefinite strike by GHMC municipal employees of seven protesting unions’ means around 27,000 workers are staying away from work. However one recognised union Greater Hyderabad Municipal Employees called it off following talks with the state home and labour minister, who promised to frame a policy by the month end.
A massive dharna is to be held at Indira Park on July 11 morning and is to be attended by over 15,000 employees and leaders of the opposition party. The strike is leaving 16,000 metric tonnes of garbage.
On four to five occasions with the state labour minister, talks failed. Unless the Chief Minister comes to terms and agrees to the demands no worker will attend duties, states all the seven unions.
On Friday the GHMC pressed into service 672 vehicles. Debris has been removed from 584 dustbins. Garbage still exists in 592 public places. All together 3,973 volunteer workers were on duty on Friday. The GHMC deployed over 3,000 students and members of a self help group to clear the garbage as temporary garbage workers.
The special commissioner, GHMC Navin Mittal has issued the following orders.
1. Salaries of outsourced scheduled shift drivers will be doubled. The GHMC is paying Rs 350 per outsourced employee in view of the strike.
2. Saturday, July 11 is a working day for all the outsourced employees to clear garbage.
3. The priority is to remove garbage from the main streets, colonies.
4. 3,000 employees put on sanitation jobs.
