Income-generating billboards to continue standing tall in Kerala

The government has now decided to retain income- generating billboards, hoardings and display boards

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Nearly a month after the government decided to pull down all illegal hoardings, billboards and display boards affecting the visibility of drivers on the national and state highways and other important roads, the local bodies have applied pressure to go slow on the move saying it was adversely affected their income.

The government has now decided to retain income- generating billboards, hoardings and display boards. But there is still no clarity on what is to be done to those hoardings which are hazardous, distract drivers and hinder the free flow of traffic.

“We are only allowing income-generating hoardings, billboards and advertisement boards. But there will be zero tolerance towards unauthorised ones. Hoardings and display boards on KSEB electricity poles will be pulled down from July 15 onwards,” said urban affairs minister Manjalamkuzhy Ali.

Sources said the matter came up for discussion at the cabinet meeting on Wednesday during which a few ministers complained that the decision should have been taken after discussions.
