Iftar in solidarity with Palestinian farmers today
Kozhikode: A group of farmers and activists are holding an Iftar party here today in solidarity with the Palestinian farmers.
They plan to serve dishes made of the war-ravaged country’s farm produces like olive oil and dates for the fast-breaking meal.
Fair Trade Alliance, Kerala (FTAK), an independent farmers’ movement that claims 4,000 membership, is the organisers of the Iftar along with the Elements, an organic food marketing network.
“It’s a symbol of protest and resistance,” said poet and social critic Civic Chandran. He finds significance in their slogan “when Narendra Modi goes to Israel, we bring Palestine to Kerala” at a time when “the global politics increasingly tend to turn right”.
“It’s not just an Iftar meal but a proclamation of solidarity with the farmers of Israel during the holy month of Ramzan saying we are with you,” he said.
The Jerusalem Olive Oil brand brought from Palestine would also be launched at the venue.
The oil produced by about 1,800 farmers is sourced by Palestine Fair Trade Organization from Jenin region.
Author and culinary expert Ummi Abdulla who took the taste of Malabar on to the global arena would launch the product.
“We believe Iftar would bring together all like minded people of Malabar who share the same concern against the Israeli aggression on Palestine and oppression of its people,” said Tomy Mathew of Elements.
