Traffic advisory meets a farce in Nellore

Plans to address Nellore city’s traffic issues remain only on paper
Nellore: Traffic advisory committee meetings have become a farce as none of the recommendations made during the periodical sittings are implemented. Interestingly, all the top brass of the district administration are members in the committee but this is not making any difference with regard to applying the decisions to deal with the chaotic traffic conditions in city.
Some among the resolutions in the meeting held in August last year include reducing the height and size of traffic islands causing inconvenience to the motorists, shifting of electrical transformers located on roads and installing traffic signals.
In fact, the height of the traffic islands near Current Office and Vedayapalem junctions which blocks the view of vehicles taking a turn from other side is the main reason for frequent accidents at the junction.
The NMC is yet to act on one of the resolutions pertaining to calling tenders to fix traffic signals at all important junctions apart from completing repair work at existing traffic signals in eight places.
One of the prime reasons for traffic snarls is encroachment of city roads. The committee told the city planning section to remove encroachments within two days during the meeting held on August 14, 2014, but there was hardly any action.
Lamenting over the traffic situation prevailing in city, advisory committee member Anam Venkata Krishna Reddy underlined the need to remove road margin encroachments and stop new registration for auto rickshaws to harness the traffic flow in the city. He expressed surprise over laxity of the officia-ls in implementing the committee’s resolutions.
