DYFI joins hands with SFI for more punch
CHENNAI: Many parts of Malabar region, especially Kannur district literally turned into a battlefield on Thursday, with fierce clashes between the police and DYFI protesters showing solidarity with the SFI.
The march was in protest against the delay in distribution of textbooks and also on the police action against SFI agitators in Thiruvananthapuram and Alappuzha on Monday.
Owing to the march declared by the DYFI activists, vehicular traffic in the city was blocked for hours at various parts, including pocket roads, putting the public at the receiving end.
Kozhikode witnessed only a minor violence. Policeman Babu from Medical College station was injured when DYFI activists pelted stones at him.
More than 200 police personnel, including the traffic police, were appointed at various parts of the city in order to stop the protesters marching towards the DDE office.
A big contingent of police led by ACPs A.J. Babu and Josey Cherian was deployed on duty. The protest in Kozhikode was led by DYFI leader P.A.Mohammed Riyas who ensured that activists maintained peace.
In Kannur, the march turned violent and police had resort to lathi charge to disperse the mob. Around 15 policemen and as many DYFI workers were injured in the violence.
