KASARGOD: A mentally deranged person hacked to death a boy, 8, while he was on his way to school at Kannoth, near Kallyot in Kasargod on Thursday. The deceased has been identified as Fahad, son of Abbas, a local resident.
The boy was a Class III student of Kallyot government higher secondary school. Fahad, along with other students, was going to school around 9 am when his neighbour, Vijayan, 35, appeared on the road brandishing a knife.
While the others managed to run away, Vijayan got hold of Fahad and hacked him on his head and throat. The boy died on the spot. The police arrested Vijayan and recovered the knife.
According to the locals, Vijayan had previously made a hoax phone call to police two years ago about a bomb on a running train.
He was later let off because of his mental state. Vijayan was reportedly sent for treatment after the incident.
Locals said that Vijayan had suspected that Abbas had provided his details to the media in the incident.
In anothre incident days, before the killing, Vijayan had an altercation with Abbas for attacking his pet kitten.
