Villagers take out frog yatra in Adilabad

Now farmers are giving water brought in drums in bullock carts to the growing plants to save them
Adilabad: Farmers frustrated with irregular rains resorted to praying to the rain god to save their just grown plants as they are withering due to the dry spell. They are also resorting to ‘Kappathalli Atalu’ (parading a frog tied to a pole and pouring water on it and going from house to house in the villages and towns) hoping that the rain god will fulfil their wish.
A majority of the farmers sowed cotton and soya seeds on a large scale in the district with good rainfall in the month of June but now they are suffering due to irregular rains in July. The expected area of cultivation is 6 lakh hectares for Kharif in the district.
So far, cotton was sown in 2.65 lakh hectares against an estimated 3.5 lakh hectares while Soya was sown in 79,000 hectares in the district. However, the district has received 328.0 mm of rainfall against the normal rainfall of 200 mm in June this year. But the district received only 73 mm rainfall in June last year. Now farmers are giving water brought in drums in bullock carts to the growing plants to save them.
